The NMO group at the Walton Centre consists of a unique dedicated NMO multidisciplinary team providing a specialist service for patients with confirmed or possible NMO.
NMO (also called Devic’s Disease) is a rare demyelinating disease predominantly affecting the optic nerve and spinal cord. Due to its rarity many doctors and therapists may not be aware of the complexities in its treatment and diagnosis. The Walton Centre is funded by the National Commissioning Group and Department of Health as a national referral centre for NMO as a diagnostic and advisory service.
The clinic provides diagnosis and management advice through a combined approach incorporating
- Clinical assessment
- Specialised test (MRI,NMO antibody, lumbar puncture, electrophysiological
tests, etc.)
- Treatment includes
-Acute Relapse management
- Prevention of relapses
- Symptom management (Pain, bladder, bowel, spasms, fatigue etc)
- Multi-disciplinary therapy team assessment ( see below )
- If required inpatient evaluation and treatment will be arranged
The Arrow indicates spinal cord
inflammation in NMO.
Patients are offered an appointment, during which they will have the opportunity to meet all members of the team who will offer information and advice relevant to specific symptoms and if necessary refer and liaise with therapists local to the patients home.
Referrals to the clinic can be made by GPs via Choose & Book or by writing to Dr Anu Jacob, Consultant Neurologist Walton Centre, L9 7LJ
