Neurophysiology

Clinical Neurophysiology is a diagnostic specialty which involves a wide array of routine and specialised clinical tests to assess function of the central and peripheral nervous systems; using diagnostic tools to record the function of the brain, spinal cord, spinal roots, peripheral nerves and muscles.

The most common investigations are the Electroencephalogram (EEG), Electromyograph (EMG), Evoked Potential (EP) and Nerve Conduction study (NCS). We also specialise in long term EEG monitoring i.e Ambulatory EEG, Video EEG Telemetry (we have three dedicated beds on Chavasse Ward), Theatre monitoring and Sleep studies including Polysomnography (PSG) and the Multiple Sleep Latency test (MSLT).

We receive referrals from Neurology, Neurosurgery and Orthopaedics and deliver an outpatient and inpatient service here at The Walton Centre and at our satellite department at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. In addition we receive referrals from a number of other hospitals within The Walton Centre catchment area.

In addition to our clinical services we organise and deliver the North West degree and masters training programmes (Practioner training programme and Scientific training programme) in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester.

The Neurophysiology department is located on the first floor of the main building opposite Lipton Ward. Our opening times are 8am -7pm Monday to Friday.

If you would like to request our services, please complete a referral form and submit to our reception.
