The Walton Centre is the only specialist hospital trust in the UK dedicated to providing comprehensive neurology, neurosurgery, spinal and pain management services and welcomes, supports and encourages work experience within these departments. We have many work placements and schemes available, please see information and how to apply for each scheme below.

Work experience

Work experience introduces young people to the world of work and is a valuable and essential part of their education.  It gives them the opportunity to gain an insight into the work they could be doing if they select that role as their career.

Pre-employment

Our Step into Work Programme, designed by the Department for Work and Pensions, is an employment programme to support, train and help prepare unemployed adults who have an interest in a career in Health and Social Care. The programme consists of a 12-week placement and includes a training qualification delivered by a local college.

Work based learning with the Trust enables learners to develop their skills and knowledge and have an opportunity to work in a realistic environment whilst creating an opportunity for the Trust to develop a skilled workforce and meet immediate or future recruitment needs.

Traineeships

Traineeships are programmes for young people who are motivated but not yet ready for the apprenticeship or job they wish to apply for. They are designed to provide the skills, confidence and attitudes that young people need to thrive in the workplace.

At the core of the programme is a work experience placement to help trainees become ready for the world of work. Traineeships are delivered by training providers and the cost of the training is met by government funding. Employers work with providers to design a programme that meets their needs and can include things such as behaviours expected in the workplace, and support to achieve a standard of English and Maths.

To find out more about our traineeship programme, please email wcft.workexperience@nhs.net

Kickstart

The Kickstart Scheme was created by the government to create thousands of high quality six-month job placements for young people and as part of our social responsibility, we wanted to get involved to help young people gain valuable job experience to help with their future careers. The placements will last for six months, consist of 25 hours a week and paid at either national minimum or national living wage. Participants will work within one of our departments to gain knowledge that will hopefully give them enough experience, knowledge and skills to gain permanent employment.
