About Athar Barakat

After completing the Foundation Programme, Dr Athar Barakat undertook Core Medical Training in the Mersey Deanery, which included training in multiple medical subspecialties, including stroke and neurology. During this time, they completed the membership exams and obtained the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians post-graduate degree.  

Dr Athar Barakat then started their Radiology training in the same training scheme, rotating across the various Trusts in Merseyside, gaining skills and knowledge in multiple radiology subspecialties including emergency radiology, body radiology, as well as head and neck radiology.  

After general radiology training, during which time they obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists post-graduate qualification, Dr Athar Barakat trained as a Diagnostic Neuroradiology Fellow at The Walton Centre, before being appointed as a Consultant in August 2020. Dr Barakat recently completed all modules of the European Course in Neuroradiology. 

Dr Barakat’s primary interest is in all aspects of adult diagnostic neuroradiology, including brain and spine imaging, as well as body cross-sectional imaging. They also have a strong interest in education, particularly post-graduate education, including training the radiologists of the future.
