About Helen Butterfield

Dr Butterfield qualified in medicine from Liverpool University in 1993. Following general medical training she moved into anaesthesia training within the Mersey Deanery. She completed an overseas Fellowship programme in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine at The Royal Perth Hospital in Australia from 2000 to 2001. She has been employed as a full time Consultant Anaesthetist at The Walton Centre since 2004. In 2017, she completed a Masters of Health and Medical Law at Manchester University’s Department of Law. 

Dr Butterfield’s areas of expertise include anaesthesia for spinal surgery and scoliosis surgery. Her special interests include perioperative medicine, transfusion medicine and consent for anaesthesia and surgery along with moral and ethical issues that impinge upon patient care. 

Dr Butterfield has a special interest in communication skills and end of life care. She has been involved in communication skills training and simulation workshops at the Trust’s Simulation Centre.

The Department of Neuroanaesthesia and Critical Care consists of specialist doctors in the field of neuro-anaesthesia and intensive care medicine. Approximately half of the consultants also work on the Critical Care Unit at The Walton Centre.
