Service detail

The physiotherapy botulinum toxin service is provided by clinical specialist physiotherapists who administer botulinum toxin injections to patients with spasticity and dystonia. The physiotherapists work with consultant neurologists, rehabilitation consultants and movement disorder specialist nurses.

Botulinum toxin injections

Botulinum toxin injections are provided for people with a range of conditions such as cervical dystonia, hemi-facial spasm, blepharospasm, focal limb spasticity and dystonia. The physiotherapists can give specific physiotherapy advice regarding posture, exercises, orthoses and equipment. They can also refer on to other services such as community, outpatient therapy, orthotics and wheelchair services. Botulinum toxin injections are administered using a range of techniques such as ultrasound and EMG guidance to achieve the best outcomes possible. The physiotherapists also support and advise on clinical decisions in situations that may require an alternative approach and management plan. Data gathered from clinical audits, patient outcomes and patient satisfaction surveys is essential for informing service development and best practice.
