This leaflet provides information about the role and contact details for the Brain Tumour Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS).

You will have been referred to the nurse specialist team because your doctor has found that you have a brain tumour.

A CNS is an experienced nurse in caring for patients with brain tumours.

They will act as your ‘key worker’ and will be your point of contact during your diagnosis and surgical treatment to support you and your family

You will be provided with the name of a CNS. However, any member of the team can support you.

The CNS works as part of the Neuro-Oncology team, along with Neurosurgeons, Oncologists, Radiologists and Pathologists.

The CNS will liaise with other members of the multidisciplinary team such as Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapists, Dieticians and others. They may also liaise with members of the community teams such as District Nurses, GP’s and Social Workers.

Your CNS will be present in out-patient clinics and will attend the ward review of patients, alongside the medical team.

Before and after your admissions you can contact your CNS or clinical support coordinator with any questions/concerns you may have.

The CNS teams work closely with a Clinical Support Coordinator and Medical Secretaries to ensure your enquiry is dealt with appropriately.

A member of the team can help with physical symptoms, medication queries, emotional support and practical advice during your diagnosis/treatment.

CNS will review any issues you have and may be required to seek further advice from the medical team and/or refer you onto other professionals who may be more suitable for your needs.

The CNS team also holds various patient information events such as ‘Coping Better Together’. For further information please contact your CNS or clinical support coordinator.

Clinical Support Coordinator:

Our clinical support worker is available to support you and your family during your treatment at the Walton Centre.
• Pre-op calls to reassure you prior to surgery.
• Ward visits before discharge, to supply information relevant to your needs.
• Post-discharge calls to ensure you are managing at home.
• Referral to local support services as required.
• Holistic needs assessment (HNA).

Holistic Needs Assessment (HNA):

HNA provides the opportunity to identify and discuss any concerns you may have with your key worker (CNS or clinical support coordinator). This can include physical, emotional, practical and financial, or anything that is important to you. HNA can be done face to face or as a telephone appointment. Please contact our clinical support coordinator to arrange an appointment or to find out more information on 0151 556 3778
