We would like to remind you that the restrictions currently in place across the NHS will remain for the foreseeable future. This includes limitations on visiting patients, and infection control measures such as wearing face masks, temperature checks and maintaining social distancing when at our hospital.

The Functional Neurological Disorders Service provides multidisciplinary assessment and onward referral to appropriate treatment services where appropriate.

The service includes:

  • Consultant Neurologist
  • Consultant Neuropsychologist
  • Consultant Neuropsychiatrist
  • Clinical Psychologist
  • Physiotherapist

We currently have one Clinical Psychologist who provides psychological therapy for patients with functional neurological symptoms.

The Neurology Department is located on the 2nd floor of the main Walton Centre Building.

The Neuropsychology Department is located on the 1st floor of the Sid Watkins Building.

Internal referrals are via form on EP2 or letter to the FND service.

Functional Motor Disorder

It is a common condition where people experience abnormalities of control of movement, for example weakness of limbs, walking difficulties, tremors, jerks or abnormal posture of the limbs. 

Functional Motor Disorder - Physiotherapy Intervention

It is a programme that aims to help people understand the diagnosis of functional motor disorders (FMD) and learn strategies to retrain their movement.

Functional Neurological Disorder - Psychotherapy Service

Sometimes FND symptoms resolve naturally when the diagnosis is explained. But, for most, psychotherapy is beneficial, and is the recommended treatment for FND.

Functional Neurological Disorders

This term describes a problem with the functioning of the nervous system in a structurally normal brain. Functional neurological disorders (FND) are common and account for up to a third of outpatient neurology attendances. They include weakness, non-epileptic attacks, involuntary movements, speech problems or any neurological symptom.

Dr Christine Burness

Dr Christine Burness is a Consultant Neurologist at The Walton Centre. She is joint clinical lead of the Functional Neurology Team and also the Trust Guardian of Junior Doctor Safe Working. 

Dr Antonio Da Costa

Dr Antonio Da Costa works as a Consultant Neuropsychiatrist at The Walton Centre. As a Consultant Neuropsychiatrist at The Walton Centre he is keen to facilitate cross speciality working within a multidisciplinary team to improve treatment outcomes in complex neuroscience patients. 

Dr Jayne Martlew

Dr Jayne Martlew is a Consultant Neuropsychologist at The Walton Centre. She is joint clinical lead of the Functional Neurology Team and also Head of the Neuropsychology Department.
