Research at The Walton Centre 

For over 15 years The Walton Centre has had a dedicated research team, working on helping develop new treatment and groundbreaking surgical approaches, all with the goal of helping to improve patient treatment and care. 

As of May 2021 The Walton Centre currently sponsor twenty studies and have 82 studies open for recruitment, 22 studies that are in follow up and 53 studies that are being set up. 

There are 56 Principal Investigators involved in current research projects, together with 14 members of staff across research teams, pharmacy, radiology and other teams.

14,000 patients have been recruited to research studies over the past 10 years.

TONIC (Trajectories of outcome in Neurological conditions) is The Walton Centre’s own sponsored study and the Trust is the most successful recruiter, with 3,647 patients recorded on Phase 3 alone.

We have performed, and continue to perform, important work into helping with the treatment and support of many different conditions, including;

  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Epilepsy
  • Headache and chronic migraine
  • Motor neurone disease
  • Chronic pain

In addition, since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Walton Centre has been involved in national studies that aim to help tackle and manage the disease, including the RECOVERY trial and the ISARIC trial.

Performance in initiating and delivering clinical research 

The Walton Centre’s activity and performance in clinical trials is measured against national government benchmarks that aim to improve the initiation and delivery of research.
