Dr Andy Nicolson - Medical Director and Deputy Chief Executive

Andrew Nicolson

How long have you worked at The Walton Centre?

I started as a Consultant Neurologist here in 2005, but first worked at the Trust in the first intake of junior doctors when the new building opened in 1998. I have been Medical Director since 2016.

What’s your background?

I am from Middlesbrough in the North East. I studied medicine at Manchester University and most of my postgraduate training was in the North West before being appointed here as a Consultant.

Tell us about your role.

I still have a clinical role with clinics both in general neurology and epilepsy, and I also have a managerial role as Medical Director and Deputy Chief Executive. It can be challenging to balance these roles but it is extremely rewarding. As Medical Director, I have overall responsibility for the medical care within the Trust, which I am proud to say is of the highest standard. As Deputy CEO, I am closely involved in all major strategic decisions taking place within the Trust, including in non-medical areas which has been a real learning curve for me over the last six years, but I firmly believe in the value of having senior clinical input into managerial decisions (which we also do with the clinical background of three other members of the Exec team).

What would you be if you were not in your current role?

If I wasn’t Medical Director, I would be happy in my previous role as a “normal” Consultant as I really enjoy the clinical work and interaction with patients. If I wasn’t in medicine I would love to be a teaching assistant for people with additional learning needs.

Favourite part of your job?

The interaction with patients, but in my role as Medical Director I feel I can make a difference to service developments within the Trust and also regionally, therefore having a positive impact on a wider patient group.

What's the first thing you do when you get home from work?
Try to relax and switch into family mode with my wife and two daughters, although I am told I am not very good at switching off from work!

What would be your perfect day outside of work?
Nice weather, relax with the family, have a few beers.

What’s your favourite song, book and film?

Song - “There is a light that never goes out” by The Smiths.
Book - I mainly read crime novels, such as Stieg Larsson or Jo Nesbo.
Film - Reservoir Dogs.

If you could have a pint or pizza with anyone in history, who would it be?

I think a few pints with Elvis, Jim Morrison and Morrisey would be great fun!
