About Antonella Macerollo
Dr Antonella Macerollo is a Consultant Neurologist at The Walton Centre and Associate Professor at the University of Liverpool.
She qualified in medicine at the University of Bari, Italy, where she also undertook my neurology training. This included two years as a clinical fellow at University College London under the supervision of Professor Kailash Bhatia and Professor Mark Edwards.
She subsequently pursued her passion for research and was awarded a PhD in Neuroscience from University College London, under the supervision of Professor Patricia Limousin, Professor James Kilner, and Professor Mark Edwards. During her doctoral research, she investigated the role of vibrotactile stimulation in improving neurophysiological markers, specifically somatosensory evoked potentials, and associated motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease.
Dr Macerollo's main clinical and academic interests are in movement disorders and related advanced therapies, particularly deep brain stimulation and MRI-guided focused ultrasound. She has also developed clinical and academic expertise in Tourette syndrome, which led her to establish the first joint neurology-neuropsychiatry clinic in the North West, co-led with Dr Alfia Arun, Consultant Neuropsychiatrist.
Her multidisciplinary research programme focuses on neuroimaging and neurophysiological biomarkers for early diagnosis and prediction of outcomes following deep brain stimulation in Parkinson's disease, dystonia, and tremor syndromes. She is also interested in developing clinical and neuroimaging pathways to improve the selection of patients with essential tremor for MRI-guided focused ultrasound. She is currently working on research projects and clinical pathways aimed at improving equitable access to functional neurosurgery for patients with movement disorders.
Dr Macerollo is a Council Member of the Association of British Neurologists, Secretary of the ABN Movement Disorders Special Interest Group, and a member of the ABN Research Committee. She is also a member of the Education Committee of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society European Section, a Steering Group member of the Dystonia Study Group, and a member of the Neurosurgery Special Interest Group of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.
Her research has been supported by the NIHR North West Coast Research Scholarship from 2019 to 2021, followed by the NIHR North West Coast Advanced Research Scholarship from 2023 to 2024. Other prestigious awards include the International Scholarship Award of the American Academy of Neurology in 2015 and the Investigator Award of the European Academy of Neurology in 2016.
Alongside her clinical and scientific work, Dr Macerollo is particularly dedicated to medical education. In 2015, she co-founded the Residents and Research Fellows Section of the European Academy of Neurology. This section provides regular seminars, mentorship activities, and exchange programmes among neurological centres across Europe, and has grown substantially over the past 12 years.
She served as Junior Delegate of the EAN Education Committee from 2015 to 2016, Associate Editor of the EAN website and EANpages from 2015 to 2020, Editor-in-Chief of EANpages from 2020 to 2021, and Editor-in-Chief of the EAN website in 2022.
She has extensive experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students and is also passionate about working with charities dedicated to neurological conditions, as they represent the voices of patients. She became a trustee of Dystonia UK in 2024 and a member of the Visibility and Awareness Steering Group of Parkinson's Europe in 2025.
In September 2024, Dr Macerollo was appointed Regional Lead for the North West of the Parkinson's UK Excellence Network. In January 2025, she was also appointed North West Specialty Lead for Neurological Disorders for the NIHR North West Regional Research Delivery Network.
