Dr Mark Ellul

 

Dr. Mark Ellul is an Honorary Consultant Neurologist at The Walton Centre, and Clinical Lecturer (NIHR) in Neurology at the University of Liverpool. He is deputy director of the Brain Infection and Inflammation Group.

He has extensive experience in research and clinical management of patients with autoimmune disorders of the central nervous system and central nervous system infections. In particular, he focuses on improving the diagnosis of encephalitis, a devastating neurological condition characterised by inflammation of the brain.

He trained in medicine at the University of Cambridge (Trinity Hall 2005-2011) with an intercalated degree in Neuroscience. He completed Foundation Training in Cambridge and then moved to Liverpool as an Academic Clinical Fellow in Neurology. In 2016 he was awarded a Clinical Research Training Fellowship from the Association of British Neurologists and completed his PhD at the University of Liverpool, supervised by Professor Tom Solomon. He became an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Neurology in 2021. He was awarded the Royal College of Physicians Specialty Certificate in Neurology in 2022. In 2023 he was the national winner of the prestigious Royal College of Physicians Turner-Warwick Lectureship.

He is Vice Chair of Trustees of Encephalitis International, a charity supporting people affected by encephalitis.
