Sutcliffe Kerr Meeting – Wednesday 29 April 2026
Engineering in Neuroscience: from Spine to AI
You are warmly invited to join the annual Sutcliffe Kerr Lecture meeting on Wednesday 29 April 2026, The Walton Centre's annual showcase event for clinicians and researchers in Neuroscience, held in conjunction with the Liverpool Neuroscience Group and the University of Liverpool.
The annual Alan Sutcliffe meeting is named in honour of Liverpool's first accredited Neuroscience clinician, and founder of Walton Hospital's Neurosurgery Department, which evolved into The Walton Centre NHS Foundation Trust.
Keynote speakers and topics:
The Bacterial Biofilm - A Dual Attraction - material technology to prevent biofilm formation on medical device implants
Prof Chris Arts, Professor of Translational Biomaterials Research, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Maastricht University Medical Centre (MUMC) and Department Biomedical Engineering Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands
Chris Arts works in the field of translational biomaterials research with emphasis on biomaterials for use in infection prevention and infection treatment & antimicrobial resistance, segmental bone defect healing and spinal fusion and spinal deformity. Furthermore, he is working on the development of high-resolution imaging techniques to visualise incorporation, degradation of biomaterials in vivo in clinical patients. 3-D printing of medical devices or implants for spinal fusion optimalisation is another one of his research pursuits.
Health data and AI - shifting from research to implementation
Professor James Teo, Professor of Neurology, Department of Neurology, King's College Hospital
James Teo is a Professor of Neurology with a clinical practice based in stroke, neurorehabilitation, general neurology, brain injury, and clinical informatics. He has led AI technology deployments in the UK public health sector and one of the first sites to deploy radiology AI systems for hyperacute stroke. He holds a number of senior advisory positions in the NHS as a member of multiple working groups for NHS England, the Department of Health and Social Care, the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Authority and for the Health Research Authority on the use of confidential patient data.
