Falls awareness
We know that being in hospital is a change to someone's usual environment. Unfortunately, some of our patients fall whilst in hospital. This includes patients of all ages who are often independent but due to the nature of their condition or injury are at a greater risk of falling and may hurt themselves including broken bones or a head injury.
We do not want this to happen to any of our patients so this information explains how you can reduce the chance of a slip, trip or fall when you are in hospital. If you have any more questions, please speak to a healthcare professional caring for you.
Here are some easy points to look out for
Hazards
Check for clutter or wet floors. Make sure your shoes fit well and trousers aren't too long
Ask
Please always ask and wait for help if you need it
Vision
Make sure you have your glasses and good lighting
Time
Never rush, allow plenty of time to get your balance when you first stand up
Aid
Make sure your walking aid is close enough for you to reach it
We have also made a short video to provide some advice to help you reduce your risk of falls.
