Neurobiochemistry
The Neurobiochemistry Department in The Neuroscience Laboratories performs a variety of routine and specialist tests. Neurobiochemistry staff are available for consultation and advice - Monday to Friday 9am until 5.30pm. Please see contact information for telephone numbers.
A wide range of analytical techniques are used ranging from complex manual techniques to highly automated testing systems. All assays are closely monitored and quality controlled.
External referrals
The Neurobiochemistry and Neuroimmunology department accepts referral tests from other healthcare providers by prior agreement - please contact the department either by telephone or e-mail.
A full list of tests available along with samples requirements, pricing and transport may be found on the left.
Sample requests
Samples should be accompanied by an appropriately completed request form or Labgnostic (NPEx) shipping manifest - referring laboratories request form is acceptable. All requests must meet our sample acceptance requirements.
Sample acceptance
All samples must meet our minimum sample acceptance requirements to enable the laboratory to produce meaningful test results after correct identification of the patient. Unequivocal identification of samples and correlation with the request form for the correct patient is essential.
| Request form | Sample |
| First name of patient | Identical to those on request form |
| Surname of patient | Identical to those on request form |
| Date of birth | Identical to those on request form |
| Hospital number or NHS number | Identical to those on request form |
| Tests required |
If essential information is missing the patient from which the sample came cannot be unequivocally identified, therefore analysis may not proceed.
Taken from DP17 - The Neuroscience Laboratories Specimen Acceptance Policy.
Consent
It is the requesting clinician's responsibility to obtain patient consent for all Neurobiochemistry and Neuroimmunology referrals.
Additional tests
Once analysed, samples will be stored. If additional tests are required, please contact the laboratory to discuss whether this would be appropriate, given the variable stability of some analytes. Additional requests for tests must be given in writing.
Neurobiochemistry results - We can report by hardcopy, secure email, fax or NPEx. Please contact us if you would like to set up NPEx for requesting and reporting.
