Update regarding Fampridine for MS patients

On Thursday 23 July, NHS England announced that Fampridine will be available to some NHS patients with MS in England. Fampridine can improve walking speed and range in MS patients who respond to the drug, which is approximately one in four, but there is no long-term disease modifying effect.

The Walton Centre, alongside other NHS providers, will begin plans to establish a pathway to assess and monitor eligible patients, so that patients can be prescribed and use the medication safely. This work will begin immediately, but will take time to ensure the service can be delivered safely and effectively for all those who are eligible.

Those patients already accessing Fampridine via private prescription should continue to do so for now. 

We currently do not have service capacity to arrange extra appointments for patients to discuss Fampridine, but can discuss eligibility at the next planned review with your consultant or specialist nurse.
